As much as off-topic discussions frustrate me, it was warranted. That girl... [he affords a Face Emotion, a brief curl of the lip and furrow of the brow.] I'm not particularly fond of her, so to see you dealing with her gave me a sense of schadenfreude.
Yes, she kept referring to me as "bird", "loon", "chicken"... [he is a CRANE.] I don't exactly enjoy her company, but cooperation is also necessary. All of us are merely trying to survive...
[Rubs his temples.]
...at least, that's what I tell myself every time she thinks of a new bird name with which to refer to me by. [He's tired.] More importantly, Felicity, your Arts seem to have damaged your hands.
( just, drinking her tea with the most deadpan, unimpressed look-
and then she notices her own hands. after a moment, she sets the cup down to roll back her cardigan's sleeve and. oh. oh the stains have moved up more, too- most of her forearm is covered.
yyyyikes. )
It's... uh. It's basically my body saying that I've been casting too much, recently. Between the werewolves, the flowers and then a couple of curses today...
( she sighs, before grabbing her tea again. she leaves the sleeve up, though, because she knows a science bitch when she sees one. )
... Focii break within an hour when I use them, so I've never really bothered.
The same phenomenon is also present in Arts users with Oripathy. [sorry but he is taking one of her hands to flip it over in hers, not disturbing her tea hopefully, and observing.] When they over-cast their arts, it worsens the infection. This isn't dissimilar.
[Giving her her hand back—]
You might need an Arts unit fit to your specific needs. I'm not sure what you've had made in the past, but I can create you one, provided I have the resources. [A trip to the Trader is in order.] Processed Originium is a strong, long-lasting material, able to power something like a computer for a hundred years before it breaks down. My Arts unit contains processed Originium, but it's fit to my specifications, so it wouldn't work quite as well for you.
... Iiii do not know what Oripathy is. Is that a disease from your world?
( but she lets him do just that, holding her tea in the other hand- she very much expected this. there's no texture or anything on her skin- just a black stain creeping up her arms like a pair of gloves. it doesn't leave any residue on his own, but the more he inspects her hand, the more it may smell like something burnt. )
It usually fades after I rest enough, it's just that we really... haven't had time to rest. I've used unprocessed wood and crystals since those are best for the flow of magic where I'm from, though- it just breaks, like I said.
... A friend once compared me to a "dynamite pack compressed into a matchstick", so most things just can't keep up with my power, I think.
Oripathy is a disease gained from making contact with unprocessed Originium, a mineral from Terra with abnormal growth properties. It frequently rains from the skies during what we call Catastrophes. We have figured out how to harness it as an energy source, but in its unrefined state, it's extremely unstable.
In short, when one contacts Oripathy, it's usually through either inhaling the Originium dust, or having it enter the body in other ways — a cut, for example. In later growth stages, crystals will show up on the surface of the body, but by that point, they've already infected the circulatory system and organs.
When the infected dies, their body explodes, and anyone near it is likely to be infected as well, continuing the cycle.
[He says all of this with a deadpan tone and straight face like he's giving a lecture and not saying the most horrifying shit known to mankind.]
As I said, though, I believe a properly-constructed Arts unit should be able to help you. Processed Originium is a strong, sturdy material. One of my coworkers on Rhodes Island can summon lightning storms, and I have yet to see one of his Arts units degrade.
[To be fair Passenger just throws stuff away so that's probably why, but the point stands.]
.... Yyyyyyyyyyyyikes. That's- that's awful. It feels like a demon curse or something.
( reminds her of the end of days. not that it was actually the end of days- but for a time... for twenty-four agonizing hours, it was. and that was the exact sort of death the world's murderer would set upon the populace for fun. (turning to stone is similar to internal crystallization, isn't it? just far more rapid. she still felt it all the same.) )
... If you think it'll help, I'll give it a shot, but I'll be honest, after this many years of just breaking shit, I'm not super hopeful.
[Gnosis does not say "oh btw demon is a nasty word to refer to the Sarkaz by" even though it would be extremely funny if he did, ASMR local bird accuses literally everybody of racism—]
We'll see. [Who knows, she might break the Arts unit and give the entire Grove Oripathy! Let's not do that though—] It would take considerable effort to degrade Originium at all.
[Again, hundred-year-long-batteries. Their entire infrastructure is based around the cancerous rocks.]
Don't jinx it, my magic is mean. ... ( SIGHS. ) Context: I am one of a handful of born-magic users who has an affinity. It's a genetic thing, like being a Wellspring- being both is ridiculously rare, though. ( she is both. ) It's what it says, the user is born with a specific magic affinity. Mine is bad luck and misfortune.
Akin to a Beast Lord... [This mutter isn't meant for her; it's his own stream of consciousness talking. What's actually meant for her is what he says next:] I see. I have yet to meet anyone with that specific affinity.
[Logos has vocal magic, like Toge. So does Phantom, if Gnosis recalls correctly. Hallucinogenic Arts are fairly common, as are summoning apparitions or various things... he hums.]
Are you able to control this ability at all? It sounds like that isn't the case.
( she waggles her hand with a soft "eeeeehn?" before shrugging. )
As a Wellspring, magic seeps out of me like no other- just an endless source of it. But its going to be attuned to my affinity regardless of what I do, so... it was worse when I was a kid. I couldn't even go near a road without causing breaks to snap and gears to bend. I'm better at reigning it in now, but things still leak out, you know? Part of why I was leader for my squadron was to personally ensure that I could account for any little thing my mere presence could make go wrong.
I see. So the issue, in summary, is that you lack control — in a non-offensive way, [to clarify,] and that you have an overabundance of it. These are solvable conundrums, given time.
What does your regimen look like in terms of practising control over your Arts?
cw implied child abuse how does this keep happening wolfie
... When I was a child I was put under forced solitary confinement- both in restricting me to my bedroom, and then in an actual solitary confinement chamber later on. Mistakes- letting anything out was met... violently. So, you learn to keep it in. Let it out in trickles and small streams, little bursts. Like turning a faucet, or something like that. Except to keep the faucet off I have to have hold of the knobs at all times.
Arts users can cast without an Arts unit, but it puts a heavy strain on their body. I draw the comparison because, to my eyes, the situation is not dissimilar in its entirety. Were we to continue using the faucet analogy, you can think of an Arts unit as a seal to stop the excess water from leaking. Think of it as caulking a drain, in a way.
Some Arts users are able to store their excess magic to release it in bursts later, when it's needed. [Thinking of Indigo's staff... hums.] A unit geared toward that may be more beneficial to you.
